Gingivitis and Periodontal Therapy
Many oral health problems originate from the gums. Diseases within the gums are known as periodontal diseases. These include gingivitis and periodontitis. These diseases can affect people of any age. Contributing factors to periodontal disease can include poor brushing or flossing habits, tobacco use (in any form), systemic issues such as diabetes and more.
Periodontal disease begins as gingivitis, which can cause redness, swelling and irritation in the gums (although it can often be painless). It’s important to address this when it occurs as it can cause more severe issues if left untreated. This is another reason why routine professional cleanings and exams are so important.
When periodontal disease enters later stages it begins to infect the tissues and bone that support the teeth, leading to loosening of the teeth and eventual tooth loss. Some experts even believe that it may increase the chances of heart disease and many other systemic diseases.
When periodontal disease occurs, usually a specialized cleaning commonly known as “deep cleaning” is needed. This involves the areas treated being numb so the dental hygienist may clean the bacteria out of the base of the pockets comfortably. This will usually be split into a few visits and will be followed by laser therapy to promote healing of the pockets and reduce inflammation and bacteria buildup. Once this is complete, patients will need to come in every three to four months for periodontal maintenance cleanings to help keep the periodontal disease arrested. With good home care habits and regular maintenance, you, teamed with your hygienist, can keep this disease under control.
Crowns & Bridges
Crowns: Dental crowns are custom-fitted tooth prosthetics that are used to replace or restore damaged or missing teeth. Crowns, also known as caps, are fixed over the surfaces of natural tooth structures or dental implants. Both crowns and bridges are non-removable and must be cemented in place by a licensed dentist. Patients who get crowns to restore their smiles achieve both the function and appearance of natural, healthy teeth.
Bridges: Bridges are used to fill in gaps left by missing teeth and are anchored in place by the natural teeth or crowns nearest the empty space. Bridges are permanently cemented and non-removable.
INTRODUCING...
CEREC Crowns
We are very excited to provide CEREC 3D technology to our patients in need of restorations. The CEREC system has revolutionized the dental field by meeting the needs of our patients in a more convenient manner. Traditional crowns require multiple office visits over several weeks, with CEREC crowns, the process of creating and placing a custom-made crown is all done in just one visit! Instead of sending off crowns to be made in a dental lab, CEREC crowns are done right in our office.
Versatility
Welcome to a world where you‘re spoiled for choice! The new CEREC Primemill combines wet and dry milling and wet grinding. No matter the indication, with CEREC Primemill you can select from a broad range of material options from validated partners providing the flexibility and predictability you need to offer patients the best possible treatment.
Choose from the full spectrum of machining options, including dry and wet milled zirconia, or wet grinding of glass and hybrid ceramics.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are very thin coatings used to fill in deep grooves and pits in the teeth that can harbor bacteria. Sealants are applied to healthy chewing surfaces of the teeth to prevent decay and cavities, especially among children. By applying sealants, families can prevent decay and save on the costs associated with filling cavities. If you plan to get sealants, the CDC recommends doing so shortly after the molars have erupted from the gums, usually beginning around age 6. Adults with sound dentition are also great candidates for sealants.
Laser Dentistry and Periodontal Therapy
For nearly two decades, lasers have been used for restorative, preventative and cosmetic purposes in dentistry. Today, lasers are approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and they have become much more prevalent and standard in dental offices across the country. Lasers work by delivering energy in the form of light. This energy can be used to achieve accuracy and precision when shaping the gums, conducting a biopsy of oral tissues, killing bacteria in a periodontal pocket or reducing a cold sore at the first “tingle.” Laser therapy is gentle and can have less post-operative discomfort as compared to conventional techniques. Many patients report less anxiety as well when using laser therapy.
Root Canals
Root canals are valuable dental procedures used to treat and preserve teeth with badly inflected roots. The pulp is the live portion of the tooth that extends into the root and contains nerve endings and tissues. When it becomes infected, patients can experience pain, swelling and even total tooth loss unless treated. Root canals remove the damaged parts of the tooth and infected root. In some cases, an antibiotic is prescribed to help prevent further infection within the tooth. The organic portion of the tooth that remains may be restored using a cap or crown that provides a natural appearance and normal tooth function.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings, also known as tooth-colored fillings, are dental restorations designed to be inconspicuous and natural in appearance. They blend well with the teeth and appear more natural than amalgam fillings, which are darker and more easily seen.
These tooth-colored fillings can be used to fill in decayed areas, as well as help to repair chipped or broken teeth. Composite fillings are aesthetically pleasing, durable and require less tooth structure removal than an amalgam or silver filling.
The filling material can be used to fill cavities or as a cosmetic bonding material to improve the appearance of front teeth.
Teeth Whitening
Whitening procedures are used to brighten the appearance of a patient’s smile – sometimes by as many as five to 10 shades in a single session. These services can be performed in an office setting or prescribed take-home use by the patient. In comparison to over-the-counter treatments, professional whitening uses stronger whitening agents that deliver faster and more effective results.
We have different options for teeth whitening such as:
-
Custom fitted refillable whitening trays for take-home use
-
Prefabricated professional whitening kits
Nitrous Oxide
We provide our patients with the option to use nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to help them relax. This safe and effective sedative mixed with oxygen provides more comfort during certain procedures. This is not meant to put you to sleep and should wear off soon after the mask is removed.
Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are used to cosmetically enhance the appearance of one or more teeth. They are very thin porcelain or resin shells that are customized for a desirable color and shape. They are bonded to the surface of the teeth to reshape broken, misshapen or irregular teeth, as well as provide a solution for discolored teeth that do not respond to traditional whitening treatments.
Botox
You’ve probably heard of this line-erasing treatment because it’s been safely used by millions since it was approved for cosmetic use more than a decade ago. The “tox” at the end of the word signals that it’s toxin, produced by Clostridium botulinum. When injected into facial muscles, the botulinum toxin can temporarily paralyze muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle and crease (between the eyebrows, for example).
Night Guards
Teeth grinding or clenching, also known as bruxism, is pretty common and can be painful and destructive to teeth. Some may not even be aware of their own grinding. Some signs you may be a teeth-grinder are waking up with dull headaches, jaw soreness, face pain and fatigue. In some cases, it’s the bedroom partner who hears the grinding. Occasional bruxism may not cause any real concerns, but when it’s done regularly over time, it can cause broken teeth, loss of tooth enamel and in severe cases, loss of teeth. The exact cause is unknown, but it’s believed that stress and anxiety play the biggest role. Other causes may also be the use of alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, sleep apnea, snoring, an abnormal bite or crooked teeth. A custom night guard can prevent the wear and tear on your teeth, preventing bigger issues in the future.
Onlays
Onlays are dental restorations that are more extensive than dental fillings but less than crowns. They are typically formed in a dental lab and are made of gold, porcelain or resin depending on the patient’s needs and aesthetic goals. Porcelain onlays are bonded to the surface of damaged teeth and matched to the color of the surrounding teeth.
